Results from the EKKA Paddock to Palate competition

PALGROVE has again demonstrated the incredible depth of its beef breeding operation, winning the JBS Paddock to Palate 100 day HGP treated grain-fed export challenge for the third year running.

Held at Picnic Point in Toowoomba, the awards evening was attended by a crowd of 150 competitors and sponsors involved in the prestigious Royal Queensland Show event.

Palgrove's outstanding, winning pen of six Charolais/Angus-cross secured the Sturrock Trophy and were also named second in the pen of carcases class. The winning pen had a daily gain of 2.72kg putting on an average of 271.6kg liveweight, to produce a 376.7kg carcase. Palgrove's best performed animal recorded a winning 3.27kg daily gain.

Second place went to Hamish and Mary McIntyre, McIntyre Agriculture, St George, for their Angus, which was also the winning pen of carcases. Those steers put on an average of 236kg with a daily gain of 2.36kg, to produce a 359.3kg carcase.

McIntyre Ag also scored both first and second in the eating quality class and won the highest individual index score. Third place in that category went to Hinz Grazing, Drillham, with Shorthorns.

Leading Shorthorn breeders G Morgan and Co, The Grove, Condamine, came in third overall with 393.5kg carcases, a 2.69kg daily gain and a 268.5kg increase.

The Brown family, Jabinda, Tambo, (Santas) produced a winning 2.857kg daily gain, with Juandah Pastoral, Wandoan, (Charbrays) second with 2.832kg, and D&AD Bassingthwaighte, Wallumbilla, (Santas) third on 2.797kg.

100 DAY HGP FREE

In second place was the Millner family, Rosedale Livestock, Blayney, with a pen of Charolais-cross. Last year's inaugural winner, G Morgan and Co was third. The Morgan's Shorthorns topped the eating quality class and had the highest individual index score winner.

Palgrove capped off the competition also winning the 100 day HGP free grain-fed challenge and collecting the Arthur and Kath Bassingthwaighte Trophy, this time with a pen of purebred Charolais. Those six steers produced average 373.2kg carcases, recording an average daily gain of 2.12kg for a 214kg liveweight increase.

Minnamurra Pastoral, Willala, NSW, had the champion carcase with a Speckle Park/Angus-cross. The Brown family, Jabinda, Tambo, produced the reserve champion with a Santa.

Gyranda, Theodore, topped the daily gain competition on 2.419kg, D&AD Bassingthwaighte second with 2.337kg, and Jabinda third on 2.277kg. Gyranda also had the single highest animal daily gain with 3.26kg.
